An album released in 1987 by American contemporary composer Philip Glass, a Baltimore native, whose soundtrack for the documentary Powaqqatsi – Life in Transformation was also featured in the first edition of the guidebook Obscure Sound. The music was written for a stage production by the New York City Ballet, choreographed by Jerome Robbins and premiered in 1983. Side A consists of five pieces commissioned by the Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation, performed by an orchestra featuring Michael Riesman on piano and synthesizer, Dora Ohrenstein on vocals, and a 26-member ensemble. Side B is a suite of three pieces, scored for a slightly smaller ensemble than Side A. Both sides present minimal ensembles built on simple repeating phrases that shift measure by measure, with the minimalist writing on Side B in particular showcasing Glass at his best.
