Also featured in the first edition of the guidebook obscure sound, where his soundtrack for the documentary film Powaqqatsi - Life in Transformation was introduced, this is a 1986 album by Baltimore-born American contemporary composer Philip Glass. Released under The Philip Glass Ensemble name in an orchestral format, the album features vocalists on each track, including Bernard Fowler and Linda Ronstadt, with lyrics contributed by Suzanne Vega, David Byrne, Laurie Anderson and others. Highlights include A2, where electronics such as synthesizers and drum machines are layered with strings and horns, and B3, featuring The Kronos Quartet. While unmistakably rooted in Glass’s own minimalist language, this elaborately crafted work moves between contemporary/avant-garde music and pop, revealing a distinctive and highly imaginative crossover sensibility.

A2: Lightning
B3: Forgetting
