An Italian pianist heard with Tullio De Piscopo and Claudio Fasoli’s groups, and also in superb form on Massimo Urbani’s landmark Dedication to A.A. & J.C. / Max’s Mood, Luigi Bonafede issued this leader album in 1979. Featuring an unusual quartet with Lucio Terzano (b), Piero Leveratto (b), and Paolo Pellegatti (ds), the record delivers a beautifully balanced ensemble sound that remains tonal and cohesive despite its freeform approach. Highlights include the groovy Latin jazz of A2, where a minimally repeating contrabass pattern meets Bonafede’s springy, dancing piano, and B1, where the two basses intertwine in deep, richly textured interplay. An overlooked masterpiece and highly recommended.
