A 1970 album by Ralph Lundsten, Sweden’s nationally celebrated composer and master of fantastical electronic music. The music was originally composed and produced in 1969 for Ivo Cramer’s contemporary ballet A Plate of Pea Soup. Although this is an early work in Lundsten’s catalogue, his distinctive sonic imagination is already fully apparent. Vast, endlessly spacey electronic tones seem to shoot off into the far distance before suddenly rushing back toward the listener with tremendous force, creating an intense and highly physical electronic soundscape. Compared with his later work, there is far less of the fairy-tale-like quality that would come to characterize much of his music, and the overall approach is considerably more avant-garde. The reverse of the sleeve features photographs from the ballet, which itself appears to have been extremely experimental. For a recording made in 1969, the sheer bodily impact, spatial depth, and sound imaging are remarkable.
