American pianist Ran Blake, who recorded an album as a duo with vocalist Jeanne Lee in the late 50s and then, after several years of training, released works on ESP-Disk in 1966, released a solo piano album in 1975 on Paul Bley's Improvising Artists Inc. The album is a collection of small pieces that include original scores as well as Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and standard numbers, but the style of playing is very distinctive in that it is devoid of any ornamentation, and the essential melody of the piece is captured only by the force of the attack of the keyboard strikes. It is no wonder that Paul Bley shared this style of playing. It is a work with a mysterious charm that draws you in before you know it. Please give it a listen.
