American pianist Randy Weston, of Jamaican heritage, had a long and prolific career starting in the 1950s. In 1966, he released the classic African Cookbook, a soulful post-bop masterpiece infused with deep blues and an undeniable African spirit. This 1957 album, released on Riverside, features a live recording from a 1956 performance at New York’s Café Bohemia. It showcases a quartet with Ahmed Abdul-Malik (b), Al Dreares (ds), and Cecil Payne (bs). Weston’s playing, characterized by his distinctive touch and melodic approach influenced by Thelonious Monk, stands out in this early classic. This is the 1993 Japanese pressing from Victor’s Analog Masterpiece Selection – Riverside Edition.
