American pianist Randy Weston, of Jamaican heritage, had a long and prolific career starting in the 1950s. In 1966, he released the classic African Cookbook, a soulful post-bop masterpiece infused with deep blues and an undeniable African spirit. This 1957 album, released on Riverside, features a live recording from a 1956 performance at New York’s Café Bohemia. It showcases a quartet with Ahmed Abdul-Malik (b), Al Dreares (ds), and Cecil Payne (bs). Weston’s playing, characterized by his distinctive touch and melodic approach influenced by Thelonious Monk, stands out in this early classic.
