Portuguese reed player Rao Kyao, aka Joao Maria Centeno Gorjao Jorge, began his career in modern jazz and went on to establish a distinctive style from the 1980s onward, blending folk music from various countries. This album, released in 1989, features a band centered around Kyao’s bamboo flute, joined by Portuguese guitar, piano, bass, tabla, timpani, and accordion, performing mainly arrangements of Portuguese fado and popular songs. The bright, ethnic-tinged sound vividly evokes the mountain village scenery depicted in the artwork, making for a deeply pleasant listen. Highly recommended for fans of Collin Walcott and Oregon.
