Released in 1971, this album is a collaboration between Ravi Shankar, the internationally renowned sitar master of North Indian classical music, and André Previn, the American composer and conductor who had been active at the forefront of music since the 1940s.
The work features orchestral scores by Shankar, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under Previn’s direction. Indian classical music and Western music are fundamentally different in both structure and form, yet here one can clearly hear that the compositions are based on scales conceived with the orchestral setting in mind. Shankar would go on to make full use of this approach in later soundtrack works as well. Original Indian pressing.
