Original soundtrack album for Genesis, the 1986 Hindi-language film directed by Mrinal Sen, with music by the master of Indian classical music, Ravi Shankar. The film was screened at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival and is an allegorical work depicting human exploitation and desire. Built around the classical Indian sonorities of the sitar, the score unfolds through brief scene-setting passages, tense rhythmic movements, and meditative melodic lines, evoking both the arid desert landscape and the inner psychology of its characters. As with Shankar’s music for Gandhi, it is a superbly dramatic score, marked by waves of stillness and upheaval.
