This is a field recording of Balinese gamelan and kecak music from Indonesia, released in 1969 by the American Nonesuch Explorer Series, known for its numerous field recordings and world music productions. The recording was made by David Lewiston, who handled many field recordings for the same label. A1, "Golden Rain," is a relatively new style of gamelan composed by Gde Purana in the mid-1960s, while A2, "Bumblebee," was composed in the early 1950s by J Mario, the first famous dancer of Gamelan Gong Kebyar. Both are among the fastest styles of Gamelan Gong Kebyar. You will be captivated by their energetic and beautiful sound. Side B features "The Ramayana Monkey Chant," Balinese communal ritual music where a large number of men form a circle, raising their arms high and chanting in an ecstatic state. It is recorded with an immersive sound, including ambient sounds like birdsong.
