An exceptional album released in 1974 as part of the prestigious Nonesuch label's Explorer Series, featuring traditional folk music from the Kashmir region of Central Asia. The recordings were made by David Lewiston, who contributed extensively to this series with various on-location recordings. Side A includes the traditional Kashmiri folk dance-drama Jeshnara (A1), Qasals (A2), songs of the people developed from the folk melodies of the hilly areas of southern Kashmir, including Kashtawar and Bhudrawar, and a soaring melody performed on the sarangi (A3). Side B features an ensemble of sarangi, rabab, and nat (B1), farmers’ work songs (B2), and classical music performed on the santoor (B3). This outstanding album offers a rich glimpse into the diverse musical traditions and cultural heritage of the Kashmir region.
