A field recording album of Caribbean folk music released in 1972 on Nonesuch's Exploler Series, a prestigious American label that releases a wide range of classical, contemporary and folk music. Recorded by John Storm Roberts. Recorded by John Storm Roberts, the album features local music from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica. While most people are familiar with Caribbean music from the 1970s onward, such as calypso, soca, zouk and reggae, this album features traditional ritual music from before European colonization. From indigenous percussion and chants to solo chanting and large group chanting, this is an excellent collection of very primitive Caribbean music.
