Since the mid-1950s, Richard Davis, an American bassist who was active in Son Shirley's group and also served as a backing musician for Sarah Vaughan, recorded his first leader album for Germany's MPS label in 1970, leaving behind a masterpiece on Muse Records in 1973. This album features recordings made in 1969 at the MPS studio in Germany with an octet including Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), Jerry Dodgion (alto sax), Eddie Daniels (tenor sax), Pepper Adams (baritone sax), Roland Hanna (piano), and Louis Hayes (drums). The album showcases a gem of post-bop music, transcending the orthodox bop style with its own aesthetics, featuring vibrant ensembles and colorful contrasts on A1, the beautiful contrast between Hanna's delicate piano and Davis's mellow bass on A2, superb bass solos by Davis on A3/B1, and the impressive title track B2 featuring bowed bass and muted trumpet creating a mystical atmosphere. This domestically reissued album, originally released by Teichiku in 1982, presents the first part of a sublime post-bop journey.
