A 1970 album by American saxophonist Robin Kenyatta, who first came to prominence after joining the Bill Dixon Quintet in the 1960s and quickly established his reputation through appearances on Sonny Stitt recordings and leader dates for ECM. He is joined here by a formidable quartet featuring Wolfgang Dauner (p), Arild Andersen (b), and Fred Braceful (ds). Highlights include the spiritual A1 and B2, where earthy flute and wildly expressive clavinet swirl through the music, and B1, whose development from the middle section onward strongly recalls the sound of Dauner’s group Et Cetera. Adventurous and avant-leaning yet filled with an exceptionally organic sense of emotion, this is a true masterpiece of ethno-jazz. This copy is the US pressing released in 1973.
A1: Girl from Martinique
B1: Thank You Jesus
B2: We’ll Be So Happy
