Released in 1985, this album is by Roger Eno, Brian Eno’s younger brother, who began pursuing his musical career in earnest after appearing on Brian Eno’s 1983 album Apollo. It was co-produced by Brian Eno and Canadian artist Daniel Lanois, who also contributed to Apollo. A gentle ambient work centered throughout on piano and synthesizer, the album reveals a profound influence from Erik Satie. The late Japanese environmental musician Hiroshi Yoshimura described it as carrying “the same breath as Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies” and noted that it “takes the form of cyclical chord progressions in which four to six harmonies are repeated, with the piano tone at the center.” His description is absolutely fitting: the recurring melodies unfold slowly, like ripples spreading across the surface of water. This is a soft and delicate world of sound that blends naturally into any landscape, whether surrounded by nature or within the city.
