This album features flute music composed by Toru Takemitsu, Joji Yuasa, Kazuo Fukushima, Yoritsune and Yorinaki Matsudaira, released in the early 1970s on the CBS Contemporary Series. It features a solo by flutist Ryu Noguchi, known for his performances of Toru Takemitsu's works such as "Miniatur - Art" and his work with Hiroshi Wakasugi and Saburo Ueki in <Chamber Music '70>, and a duo by Robert Aitken on each side. Common to all the pieces is the Japanese 'ma' (pause) and description of scenes, which is particularly strong in Fukushima's 'Mei' and 'Harusan', and Takemitsu's 'Mask for Two Flutes', which is said to have been inspired by the Noh play.
