A 2LP album released in 1978 as the 7th installment of ABC Impulse!'s. This album features recordings made between 1974 and 1975 by American saxophonist Sam Rivers, a central figure in the loft jazz scene that flourished in New York in the mid-1970s, known for his acclaimed duo album with Dave Holland and the "The Tuba Trio" trilogy released on the Circle label. Sides A/B/C1/C2 feature a trio with Cecil McBee (b) and Barry Artschul (ds), C3 features a trio with McBee (b) and Norman Connors, C4/C5 feature a trio with Richard Davis (b) and Warren Smith (ds), and Side D features a trio with Arild Andersen (b) and Altschul (ds). Rivers is known for his powerful, elephant-like blowing, but on Side A, he showcases melodies based on oriental scales, and on Side B, he delivers earthy solos with vocals and flute. These are valuable recordings that demonstrate his excellent melodic performances.
