The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Seiji Ozawa, performs four compositions written in the 1960s by Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan's most famous composers. Recorded at Toronto's Massey Hall with Yuji Takahashi on piano, A1 is a work for solo piano and orchestra, the first performance of which was commissioned by the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra in 1957, A2 is a full orchestral work, and B1 is a work for orchestra and Japanese instruments such as the biwa and shakuhachi, which Takemitsu was deeply exploring at the time. B2 is a string quartet work commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation in 1966. In the booklet inside the spread, Toru Takemitsu writes: "It would be foolish to adapt Japanese instruments to the Western world with acoustic fetishism, which does not move things. The words of Toru Takemitsu are piercing.
