A 1988 album by Australian pianist Serge Ermoll, who also contributed to the Cornerstones of Australian Jazz Collector’s Series, a series devoted to outstanding Australian jazz recordings including Brian Brown’s acclaimed The Planets. Ermoll also appeared with his own quartet on singer Maree Montgomery’s classic album In Good Company; Montgomery is widely known as the “First Lady of Swing.” This album captures a live performance by Ermoll’s quartet with David Addes, Geoff Klukes, and Mike Jordan at a jazz festival held in Melbourne in 1988. The set features superb performances throughout, including A1, the jazz standard composed by Bronislaw Kaper for the 1950 film A Life of Her Own, the fast-moving McCoy Tyner composition A2, and Sonny Rollins’ classic B1. David Addes’ alto saxophone playing is particularly outstanding.
