An album released in 1967 by Italian flutist Severino Gazzelloni, who served as principal flutist of the Italian Broadcasting Corporation Rome Symphony Orchestra and, in the 1960s, was nicknamed “Guardian of the Avant-Garde”and “The Magician.” Issued as part of the prestigious German label Wergo’s Grosse Interpreten neuer Musik series. The program spans from late 19th-century composers such as Claude Debussy, Ferruccio Busoni, and Edgar Varèse, to Futurist Varèse himself, as well as cutting-edge Italian composers like Silvano Bussotti—renowned not only as a composer but also as a painter and designer—and Bruno Maderna. It even features a work composed specifically for Gazzelloni by Japanese composer Yoriaki Matsudaira. Side A offers excellent flute solos and flute–piano duos, while Side B is entirely devoted to Bruno Maderna’s “Hyperion III” for flute and orchestra, a truly powerful listening experience. Original German pressing.
