Released on ECM in 1986, this album brings together Lakshminarayanan Shankar, a member of the Shankar family who carries on the tradition of Indian classical music, and British composer and vocalist Caroline. The album also features Steve Vai on guitar, known for his work with Frank Zappa, along with Gilbert Kaufman on synthesizer and Percy Jones on bass. Built around electronic drum-machine rhythms and Vai’s hard-edged electric guitar, the music ventures into post-punk-inflected, no-wave-style synth-pop, making this one of the most unusual recordings in the entire ECM catalogue. A fascinating example of Manfred Eicher’s seemingly limitless spirit of experimentation. Original German pressing.
