American vocalist Sheila Jordan—discovered and championed by George Russell—joins forces with Norway’s premier bassist Arild Andersen, known for his many ECM appearances, on this intimate duo album from 1978. The program draws entirely from classic material: Billy Preston tunes (A1/B5), Billy Strayhorn’s A2 made famous by Nat King Cole, Steve Kuhn compositions (A3/A4), Billie Holiday’s B1, and more. Throughout, Jordan’s dry, weathered tone and unmistakable phrasing are beautifully supported by Andersen’s deeply lyrical bass, creating a relaxed, conversational atmosphere from start to finish. A5 stands out with Jordan’s deep, soulful reading of a Michel Legrand standard. Original Danish pressing. A quietly superb session.
