American West Coast drummer Shelly Manne, who began his career in the 1940s performing with the orchestras of Bobby Byrne and Joe Marsala, as well as with groups led by Coleman Hawkins and Dizzy Gillespie, released this leader album on Impulse! in 1962. The sessions—recorded and mastered by Rudy Van Gelder—feature Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax), Eddie Costa (piano, vibraphone), George Duvivier (bass), and Hank Jones (piano) in various duo, trio, and quartet settings. Highlights include Manne’s original composition A2, driven by Duvivier’s groovy bass and Costa’s vibrant vibraphone work, and A3, where Hawkins’ richly expressive tenor captivates the listener. The album also includes renditions of jazz standards, but it’s the final track B3 that truly stands out—profoundly spiritual, revealing a vision far removed from cool jazz. Manne’s primal drumming here is exceptional. Highly recommended listening. This copy is the 1970s U.S. reissue with the green label, known for its excellent sound quality.
