An American West Coast drummer, Shelly Manne, who had been active since the 1940s as a member of orchestras such as Bobby Byrne's and Joe Marsala's, and groups like Coleman Hawkins' and Dizzy Gillespie's, released a leader album in 1962 from Impulse! Records. This album features sessions with duo, trio, and quartet configurations, including Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax), Eddie Costa (piano, vibes), George Duvivier (bass), and Hank Jones (piano). Recorded and mastered by Rudy Van Gelder, it includes groovy performances by Duvivier on bass and Costa on vibes in Manne's original score A2, Hawkins' deeply expressive tenor in A3, along with other jazz standard classics. The final track B3 presents an extremely spiritual vision that is far removed from cool jazz. Manne's primitive drumming is also exceptional. Definitely give it a listen.

A2: The Sicks of Us

B3: Me and Some Drums
