This is the debut solo album by American jazz drummer Sunny Murray, who, in addition to participating in many sessions as a right-hand man to Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler, has also left behind numerous works with his own groups. Recorded in New York in 1965 and released on his independent label, the album features avant-garde jazz pioneers of the time such as Albert Ayler (ts), Don Cherry (tp), Henry Grimes (b), and Louis Worrell (b), engaging in intense, lightning-fast interplay. Of particular note is track B2, which features poetry readings by LeRoi Jones, who has also collaborated with the New York Art Quartet and Sun Ra. This artistic approach would go on to influence the Black Arts Movement of the 1970s, with figures like Gil Scott-Heron carrying on its legacy.
