An album featuring the score Sonny Rollins wrote for the 1966 film Alfie, recorded with an orchestral lineup conducted and arranged by Oliver Nelson. Centered around Rollins’ bold, full-bodied tenor, the session also features outstanding players such as J.J. Johnson, Phil Woods, Kenny Burrell, and Roger Kellaway, resulting in a superb work where the driving energy of hard bop intersects with the stylish mood of film music. The opening track is a signature performance, with Rollins’ tenor singing freely over a light, swinging rhythm and sophisticated urban horn arrangement. Each piece unfolds like a change of scene, packing the colorful atmosphere unique to a soundtrack into a compact form. Oliver Nelson’s arrangements are also highly appealing. Japanese pressing released by Toshiba in 1972. Includes obi and insert.
