This is a 1984 album by Sourakata Koité, a master of the kora and a griot from Senegal. The music radiates the vibrant, powerful tones of the traditional Gambian instrument—the kora—crafted from a large calabash resonator and a long neck strung with 21 strings. With its intricate, organically resonating melodies, the album stands out for its refined melodic lines and a strong sense of groove—a true music of the sun and the earth. Sourakata Koité’s buoyant, rhythmic singing is also superb. Even the instrumental tracks, played solely on the kora, tell stories, reflecting the griot’s role as a storyteller. The inner sleeve includes the story behind each piece. This acclaimed album was reissued in 2019 by Awesome Tapes From Africa. The copy here is the original Dutch pressing.
