The Greek group Sphinx—formed by Markos Alexiou (p, vo), George Filippidis (b), and George Trantalidis (ds), active from the late ’70s into the early ’80s and leaving behind only two albums—released this, their debut LP, in 1979. While the album does take on jazz classics such as Miles Davis’s “Nardis” and Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” it is the Alexiou-penned original material that truly stands out, delivered with an authentic approach yet filled with the kind of deep lyricism that recalls Mal Waldron. Best of all is B2, where Alexiou’s scat and piano lock into a unison groove and drive the track forward beautifully. Greek reissue pressing, likely from the 1980s.
