Stanley Cowell
Blues for the Viet Cong
Freedom/Trio Records (Japan) 1974
PA-7093 (LP) w/insert.
sleeve : EX(light wear on corner.)
media : EX/EX(some slightly noise.)
An album released in 1969 on Polydor in the UK by American pianist Stanley Cowell, the founder of the seminal Black Jazz label Strata-East. Recorded the same year at Polydor Studios in London, the album features a trio with Steve Novosel on bass and Jimmy Hopps on drums. By the late 1960s, many American jazz musicians—then gravitating toward more avant-garde expressions—were seeking new ground in Europe for live performances and recording opportunities, and this work can be seen as part of that broader movement. That said, the groove-driven performances, rooted in and expanding upon a post-bop framework, represent Cowell at his very best. The music also reflects his thoughts on the Vietnam War. Every track here is outstanding.
