This is a 1977 solo piano album by the American pianist Stanley Cowell, who is also the founder of the prestigious Black Jazz label, Strata-East. The album opens with two light ragtime pieces from Jimmy Heath's composition suite, 'The Afro-American Suite of Evolution.' It's a delightful work that brings a very enjoyable atmosphere to Bud Powell covers and Cowell's original compositions. A particularly moving and wonderful moment in the album is A3, where Cowell delivers a dramatic performance of Thelonious Monk's classic, 'Round Midnight.' A5 features a brief rendition of Bill Lee's composition played on the thumb piano, adding a unique touch. B1, with its soft ensemble featuring Yamaha's electric piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hohner Clavinet, is also outstanding. This album comes highly recommended for its exceptional qualities.
