Released in 1985 on JAPO, the ECM-affiliated label, this album is by Stephan Micus, the singular ethnic instrumentalist who freely employs everything from conventional instruments to flowerpots and stones. Warm sounds from the ten- and fourteen-string acoustic guitars designed by Micus himself blend with a shakuhachi crafted by master Gyokusui Kono, spreading through the space in beautifully resonant echoes. Each side extends well beyond twenty minutes, presenting spiritual and meditative ethnic music that transcends national and cultural boundaries. Its Eastern-inflected melodies have a particular resonance for Japanese listeners and offer a deeply soothing experience. An exceptionally serene musical world.
