Released in 1966, this album by Steve Lacy, one of the most esteemed soprano saxophone players, who had been active since the mid-1950s and made significant contributions to the promotion of Avant/Free Jazz through participation in the Jazz Composers Orchestra formed in the mid-1960s with Carla Bley and Michael Mantler at its core, as well as numerous sessions. This particular release is a reissue on an Italian label, and the original release year is unspecified. The album features recordings from a trio session with Alberto “Aldo” Romano (drums) and Kent Carter (bass), conducted in a Milan studio in 1965. It reflects the dawn of Avant/Free Jazz, with Lacy showcasing aggressive improvisation, yet maintaining a solid groove and melody. This balance contributes to Lacy's enduring popularity.
