Steve Lacy Sextet
The Condor

Active on the front lines since the mid-1950s, and from the mid-1960s onward contributing to the advancement of avant-garde and free jazz through his work with the Carla Bley– and Michael Mantler–led Jazz Composers Orchestra as well as countless sessions, Steve Lacy is celebrated as one of the greatest soprano saxophonists of all time. This leader album, released in 1986 on the distinguished Italian label Soul Note, features his sextet with Steve Potts (alto & soprano sax), Irene Aebi (vocals, violin), Bobby Few (piano), Jean-Jacques Avenel (bass), and Oliver Johnson (drums).
The album presents five compositions in which Lacy sets melodies to poems by American Beat poet Bob Kaufman, Italian experimental poet Nanni Balestrini (known for his role in the neo-avant-garde movement), and Russian Acmeist poet Anna Akhmatova. The result is a deeply compelling work. Lacy’s compositions, often employing pentatonic structures and transforming post-bop into a contemporary language, combined with Aebi’s distinctive vocals, vividly bring to life the avant-garde poetic visions. Very highly recommended.
