Steve Lacy has been active at the forefront since the mid-1950s, and since the mid-1960s he has contributed to the promotion of avant/free jazz through his participation in the Jazz Composers Orchestra, formed by Carla Bley and Michael Mantler, as well as numerous sessions. This album was released in 1962. Quartet with Charles Davis (bs), John Ore (b) and Roy Haynes (dr). The quartet was piano-less, with a soprano and baritone lead, creating a contrast between the upper and lower registers, and performed groovy tunes by predecessors such as Cecil Taylor, Thelonius Monk and Charlie Parker. It also shows glimpses of the avant-orientation that would develop later on.
