A 1980 album by Sugar Blue, a relatively obscure African-American blues harmonica player and singer from Harlem, New York. Discovered and championed by bluesmen such as Johnny Shines and Louisiana Red, he gradually made his name on the American blues scene and has remained active ever since. He is also said to have received a Grammy Award. Highlights include A3, where Sugar Blue’s slightly husky, low-register voice and deeply expressive blues harp drift over a subdued backing filled with an urban mellow atmosphere. A superb album of modern blues throughout, steeped in a sophisticated, distinctly adult mood. Deep, understated, and seriously cool.
