This is the 1988 album capturing a live performance by Sun Ra Arkestra at Shinjuku Pit-Inn, Tokyo. The album features an ensemble including Michael Ray (trumpet, vocals), Ahmed Abdullah (trumpet), Tyron Hill (trombone), Marshall Allen (alto sax), John Gilmore (tenor sax, percussion), Danny Thompson (baritone sax), Leroy Taylor (clarinet, bass clarinet), Bruce Edwards (guitar), Earl Smith (drums), June Tyson (vocals, violin), and Judith Holten (dance). The performance opens with a powerful introduction, where the melody of the traditional Japanese song "Sakura Sakura" is played with intense blowing. It then transitions into swinging big band jazz, moves through Afro-funk modes, and expands into a bluesy cosmic world. Sun Ra, at the age of 74 during this performance, had accumulated a vast wealth of experience, and his soulful cosmic love is evident in every moment. Highly recommended. No obi strip and insert.
