This is an album released in 1970 by American jazz drummer Sunny Murray as the 32nd installment in BYG's Actuel series. Sunny Murray, known for his contributions to sessions with Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler, as well as his own prolific discography with various groups, recorded this album with a quartet consisting of Byard Lancaster (alto sax, soprano sax, bass clarinet), Kenneth Terroade (tenor sax, flute), and Malachi Favors (bass) at Studio Saravah in Paris in 1969. The album features a title track, A1, where Murray combines poetry reading with an Afro-ethnic ambiance. Another standout is B1, which evokes the funeral music of African indigenous people. Throughout the album, you'll find avant-garde free jazz that strongly reflects an Afrocentric orientation. Byard Lancaster's alto saxophone performance is particularly noteworthy. Highly recommended for those who appreciate groundbreaking jazz music.
