This is the second leader album released by an American pianist who had been active since the early 1940s as a member of Harlan Leonard and His Rockets and Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra. The album, released in 1957, features the 30-year-old John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, who already had about a decade of experience. It includes recordings from 1956 at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, featuring a quartet with John Simmons on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The session showcases the vibrant contrast between Coltrane's fresh tenor saxophone and Dameron's delicate piano, with tracks transitioning from impressive Latin-themed motifs to laid-back ballads like A1 and A3 respectively. This reissue from 1986 was released by Original Jazz Classics in the US.
