A 1987 album by Japanese pianist Takashi Kako, who came from a classical/contemporary music background before awakening to free jazz and carving out his own distinctive path, fusing elements of jazz and modern composition. Recorded the same year at Kawaguchiko Studio with David Baker handling the engineering, this quintet session features an outstanding line-up: Shuichi “Ponta” Murakami on drums, Hiroshi Yoshino on bass, Jakuhiko Inoue on tenor and soprano saxophones, and Tetsuji Yoshida on trumpet. Alongside Kako’s own original scores, the album also includes compositions by Masahiko Togashi and Eric Watson. A superb performance that moves fluidly across post-bop, avant-garde, contemporary jazz, and jazz-rock, this is a brilliant work distinguished by Kako’s refined melodic sense throughout. Ponta’s drumming is also exceptionally sharp and inspired. Highly recommended.
