Japanese top drummer Takeo Moriyama, who has been active since the late 1960s as a member of Yosuke Yamashita's group and formed his own quartet in 1977, released this leader album from Germany's Enja label. The album features live recordings from the <East=West Jazz Festival> in Nuremberg, Germany, during a European tour with his quartet comprising Toshihiko Inoue (ts, ss), Shuichi Enomoto (fl, ss, ts), and Hideaki Mochizuki (b). The album opens with A1, showcasing Moriyama's explosive and intense drumming, followed by A2, where the saxophone ensemble of Inoue and Enomoto creates shadows and depth. B1 features Moriyama's primitive drumming paired with Enomoto's organic flute, delivering a stunning performance of solid and deep avant-garde jazz. Highly recommended.
