This 1972 album by Taos Amrouche, Algeria’s first female novelist who also displayed remarkable talent as a singer, stands as one of her rare and precious recordings from the 1960s and 1970s. Performed with an extremely minimal arrangement of just acoustic guitar and voice, the album features traditional music from La Alberca, a village in the mountainous region of Las Batuecas in western Spain, celebrated as one of the most beautiful villages in the country. The dry, resonant tones of the gut-string guitar and Amrouche’s vibrato-rich voice, moving effortlessly from deep lows to soaring highs, evoke a profound sense of nostalgia and timeless beauty.
