A masterpiece duo album by Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal and American cellist David Darling, released by ECM in 1984. Right from the start, Rypdal’s searing guitar solo takes you by surprise, but as Darling’s eight-string electric cello paints a vast sonic landscape, Rypdal’s wailing electric guitar soars to new heights on track A2. On track B3, the sheer silence makes you wonder if anything will happen at all—only to find yourself gradually drawn into a deep, immersive world. It’s rare to encounter music that captivates so completely with just guitar and cello. A perfect embodiment of ECM’s concept. Highly recommended.
