Released on ECM in 1980, this album is by Terje Rypdal, one of Norway’s foremost virtuoso guitarists. After making his debut in the early 1960s with the rock-and-roll band the Vanguards, Rypdal shifted his focus toward jazz following his encounter with fellow Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek in the mid-to-late 1960s, and went on to create numerous masterpieces distinguished by his remarkably broad musical sensibility. The album features a trio with Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet, flugelhorn, and keyboards, and Jon Christensen on drums and percussion. B1 opens with weightless muted trumpet and electric guitar before moving into an expansive passage propelled by low-centered drums and a driving, danceable percussion groove. B3 is exceptionally deep, enveloped in a cool, mist-like atmosphere. Throughout the album, its refined sound seems to penetrate ever more deeply into the listener’s inner world. One of the finest works from Rypdal’s middle period.
