Released by ECM in 1971, this landmark debut solo album is a masterpiece by Terje Rypdal, one of Norway’s foremost virtuoso guitarists. After making his debut in the early 1960s with the rock-and-roll band the Vanguards, Rypdal shifted his focus toward jazz following his encounter with fellow Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek in the mid-to-late 1960s, and went on to create numerous outstanding works distinguished by his remarkably broad musical sensibility. He is joined by Garbarek and other leading figures from ECM’s Nordic circle, including Bobo Stenson, Arild Andersen, and Jon Christensen. A1 fully absorbs the funk influences of Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, transforming them into jazz-rock infused with ECM’s characteristic coolness and depth. A2 is deep ethnic jazz that unfolds into a mysterious, otherworldly soundscape comparable to Finnish drummer Edward Vesala’s masterpiece Nan Madol. B1 ventures into a deep-space realm reminiscent of Herbie Hancock’s electric period, while B3 draws fully upon Rypdal’s own roots in rock and roll.
There is not a single weak moment throughout the album. The quality is astonishingly high from beginning to end. Japanese pressing released in 1973 as part of the Trio Jazz Mania series. No obi or insert.
