Released in 1974, this monumental masterpiece was the second ECM album by Terje Rypdal, one of Norway’s foremost virtuoso guitarists. After encountering fellow Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek in the mid-to-late 1960s, Rypdal shifted his focus toward jazz and went on to create numerous outstanding works distinguished by his remarkably broad musical sensibility. He is joined by Nordic jazz musicians including Jon Christensen on percussion, Sveinung Hovensjø on bass, Pete Knutsen on Mellotron and electric piano, and Odd Ulleberg on flugelhorn. Side A presents jazz-funk under the influence of Miles Davis’s electric period, with Rypdal’s intensely psychedelic electric guitar erupting amid the trippy sounds of Knutsen’s Mellotron. The 17-minute-and-37-second B-side expands into an epic orchestral jazz trip featuring the Südwestfunk Symphony Orchestra. Both sides are masterpieces of cosmic jazz-rock, unfolding with an immense sense of outer-space expansiveness. German pressing with no label code and an unlaminated sleeve.
