The Blackearth Percussion Group, consisting of Garry Kvistad, Richard Kvistad, Allen Otte, and Michael Udow from Northern Illinois University in the U.S., released their one and only album in 1974. It came out on the prestigious Opus One label, known for its collection of avant-garde and experimental works. The album includes pieces such as Lou Harrison's "Fugue," Edward Miller's "Quartet Variations," Mario Bertoncini's "Tune," Peter Garland's "Apple Blossom," John Cage's "Amores," and William Albright's "Take That." Every track is superbly performed, but a particular highlight is the A4 track, Peter Garland’s composition for two marimbas, "Apple Blossom." The piece features soft, floating marimba drones filled with overtones, creating a soothing atmosphere, and it can be appreciated as a post-ambient piece. It bears a resemblance to "Hot Air," a track from Mkwaju Ensemble's outstanding second album Ki-Motion. The album also includes a beautifully printed, small booklet that complements the release perfectly.
