Released in 1984, this album is by American pianist and composer Carla Bley, who co-founded the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association with her husband Michael Mantler and made an immense contribution to the jazz world through efforts such as protecting musicians from commercial exploitation. The album features live recordings from concerts held in New York between 1981 and 1984. The performances showcase Bley’s characteristically witty sensibility, ranging from lazy, off-kilter pieces infused with strong post-punk elements to avant-garde jazz that reconstructs early jazz in a wildly unconventional and freaky manner.
