Released in 1979, this album is by the Carla Bley Band, led by American pianist and composer Carla Bley. Together with her husband Michael Mantler, Bley founded the Jazz Composers Orchestra Association and made an enormous contribution to the jazz world, including helping to protect musicians from the pressures of commercialism. The impressive lineup includes Michael Mantler, Steve Swallow, Charlie Haden, Eugene Chadbourne, John Clark, Roswell Rudd, and others. Early jazz intersects with adventurous free jazz throughout, creating the distinctive and highly original musical world for which Carla Bley is known. The album has a strangely cinematic atmosphere, almost as though watching a Western, while the spirit of New York’s loft-jazz scene, which had been developing since the late 1960s, can be felt throughout. German pressing with insert.
