This is the 1988 album released by The Cecil Taylor Unit, led by the American jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, who, despite having a background in contemporary and classical music including Bartok and Stockhausen, pursued an extremely physical style of expression. The album features live recordings from a concert in Bologna, Italy, in 1987, performed by the quintet consisting of Leroy Jenkins on violin, Carlos Ward on reeds, William Parker on bass, and Thurman Barker on drums and percussion. The recordings are presented as a double album, capturing the intensity of the sessions with each track spanning between 20 to 25 minutes. The interplay between the musicians is breathtakingly tense throughout, with Word's flute and Barker's marimba/percussion providing captivating hooks.
