This is a 1983 leader album by the American saxophonist Charles McPherson, who collaborated with Charles Mingus, Barry Harris, Pepper Adams, among others, and has also left behind numerous leader works since the 1960s. It features a sextet lineup with Mike Wofford (piano), Andy Simpkins (bass), Kevin Quail (trombone), Donald Bailey Sr. (drums), and Hayward Brown Jr. (percussion). The album predominantly revolves around an orthodox bop style with a mature and relaxed performance. It's a smoky silver piece that can be enjoyed without any pretense. However, there are standout tracks like the Latin jazz-infused A2 with a floating conga feature, the jazz-funk A4 featuring a funky rhythm section and gentle horn ensemble interplay, and the cool modal tune B1 with Arabic melodies subtly woven into its relaxed groove. McPherson's saxophone work is truly delightful.
